Time-Tested: 70
It’s a dreary, dreary January day, but hey, Time-Tested is BACK! (hears lone, distant woop) And on a Monday too, just to surprise you even more. I need to get back into these, and there’s no time like the present!
After a quick dusting and a new coat of glitter, the wheel commanded a time limit of 70 MINUTES for a drawing from the trusty Reddit Gets Drawn.
I admit I picked this handsome chap purely for his body. I’ve not done a figure study in a long, long time, and so this was a great opportunity to try one against the clock. With that objective in mind, I actually spent a relatively short amount of time on the face compared to my usual plan of attack, which might show a little, as it’s not terribly accurate. I’m happy to have made that compromise, though; working on the torso was refreshing, and of course a lot of fun. I continued my love/hate relationship with hands and feet; indeed, the left paw and flipper were cut from the photograph, and I half-heartedly tried to improvise them in the last few minutes, as it looked plain odd without them.
I coloured this one a little differently, as I began on a grey canvas instead of black or white as I normally do. With that, I drew both shade and highlight, rather than one or the other, which is something I’ve not done often in my time here. It’s given a pleasing softness to the contrasting tones and I think this works well for this job, ie rendering skin under intense time pressure and having to sacrifice extreme detail. It’s useful to have been reminded of that.
I did start to experiment with colours, which is why there is a curious glow and a slightly orange tinge to areas of our subject’s skin. Sadly, that was where the alarms started going off, signalling the end of the exercise. Oh well! Probably one of the more enriching TTs I’ve done for a long time (though I’m aware I probably say that every edition).
Until next time. Monday, Saturday, or whenever the heck it is! Wheel see you then!!!
A young man with a smile and he’s looking great 😉 I like him, great drawing ❤

Ha, do you already know me that well haha 😉 I have to change my reactions I think…. but there is a man who is more goodlooking than this young man, mmm I wonder who it is lol ❤

Well partly knowing your form from previous handsome male drawings, yes 😉 but also because I jolly well agree with you. Very attractive guy!
Hmm? I think this man of which you speak is in your Gravatar!

You did such a knockout job in conveying the bend and twist of th model! It doesn’t need colors to look great!

Ah, thanks so much Teresa – you’re probably right about the colours, I was just had a little bit of time left and succumbed to temptation!

Great detail for just over an hour! I’m still sketching and working on proportion with that time! Well done

Thanks, Allan! These timed challenges were terrifying to begin with for that reason, but happily they seem to be having a positive effect in terms of speed and efficiency!

Beautiful, fascinating, engaging…the drawing isn’t bad either! Nice work, Jacob. Very impressive. B

Drawing is a very nice, young man is handsome. But something in the picture is not good. I don’t want it to sound like criticism. This Is my feeling. I hope it don’t touch you. My bad feeling are shorts. It seems to me that back of the shorts is in the front. I see, that shorts are dressed conversely. OK Jacob, I am not expert for drawing… ❤ Camilla

Thanks! Indeed, the shorts were probably the area I struggled with the most, which was quite a surprise really. I agree they are the weakest part of the drawing. I should add though that I didn’t really have a lot of time to work on them, having spent a big chunk of my available time on the torso.

Thanks, Lee – he looks that way in the photograph so it’s pleasing you see that. I believe, in actuality, he’s standing atop some ridiculously high building! I did think about adding in some buildings and rooftops behind him, but didn’t have time – not sure it would have worked anyway.

Wow! A whole person! Quite ambitious and such a nice looking chap! Very well done, Jacob! This is wonderful! Love the movement… You’re so good with figures. I need to practice them more. And by more I mean ever. lol

I did think it was asking a lot, but actually it was easier than a close-up portrait as it meant I could turn the detail down a couple of notches (as is clear with that face!)
You do indeed! I shan’t stop pestering until you cave in! 😉

Hehe… one day I’ll cave. Keep pestering! 😊😉

Another good’un, Jacob – I especially like the hints of colour which, at least from the way it looks on my screen, give me the feeling of a nod and a wink back to old master figure sketches drawn in sanguine. 🙂

Thanks so much, Rebecca – I’m thrilled you think so, as that was the sort of look I was (intending on) going for! I might have to break the law and continue refining this!

Wow and a whole figure, too! NIce job! I agree, torso looks terrific, as does the left arm and to me, very natural and real. Well done!

Thank you once more, Laura! I’m especially glad you think that about the arms, as the arms and legs were surprisingly tricky to get right with the slight bend in the pose. And again, glad you like the torso – I spent most of my time there 😉

lol, I can see why! 😀 I think the figure would be a whole new challenge. I’m just trying to get faces. Props to you!

Thanks so much, Jade! In timing myself I’ve often been surprised at how much I can do when under a little pressure. Still, it was a bit of a surprise how well this went – I was very lucky that it decided to fall together happily!
