Party Animal

zonkey-2Here we have a zonkey – one of the many fascinating hybrid animals that walk the earth, but doubtless one of the most adorable. Our stripey friend’s in a jubilant mood, clearly, though who knows why that could be…!

I suspect  it’s not – in fact I know it’s not – to celebrate Scrabble, much as the word game is surely synonymous with the most uproarious shindigs, but today is also Scrabble Day. This should explain to you why I’ve stuck massive tiles with the incorrect font down the side. Hmm! I’m sure I had something more clever in mind initially, but by the time I came to it, I had obviously drawn a blank.

With my tendency toward word games as is, it shouldn’t be much of a surprise to learn that I rather enjoy Scrabble, and always have. I think I liked the idea of dealing with tiles and letters after watching Countdown. I was very little, and didn’t really know what I was doing – this is my primary excuse for placing WANK on the board at the age of about three or four, and unsurprisingly rendering my father speechless. It’s funny how I just remembered that, in writing this post. I think I was just making the best of the tools that I had. Honesty – it was a stroke of luck, and thankfully I pulled it off.

But indeed, I remain utterly, utterly hopeless at the game. I was going to say that ZONKEY would probably be quite an impressive play, but who knows? I suppose it’d be a good way to dispatch some unwelcome tiles, but in terms of score there’s all that triple word and double letter carry-on to consider. It’s all about geography – and that’s where it starts to become too much for my feeble brain. That, and the fact that there was no way of fixing the tiles into the sectors, of course. Even at three, this bugged me, not least because certain feline spectators took to making pitch invasions and changing the entire configuration.

Minor niggles aside, it’s still a lot of fun and an invigorating challenge. Is there a way to play online? I expect so. If anybody reading this fancies a game,  now or sometime in the future: you’re on! You are so going down (as the next person to trounce me, convincingly, at Scrabble).

  1. I love your Zonkey, Jacob. And, his party gear! I love scrabble, I play the Words with Friends version on the iPhone. My older brother and I have had a continues game going for three years. 😄

  2. Cutest zonkey I ever laid eyes on…might be the only zonkey I ever laid eyes on…LOL! I loved playing Scrabble; was pretty good at it, too. But I have no time these days.

  3. Zonkey would be perfect for a high score in Scrabble! If one could get away with it. Always a game that is a little hard on the head especially when playing against a serious player and you have all the X’s, Z’s and Q’s without a U! 🙂 Your Zonkey is an adorable creature by the way.

Thanks, Susan! Oh yes, I forgot the woes of Q without U – how very frustrating! Thank goodness for those rare words which don’t need the U, eh.

  4. Love the zonkey, he looks just perfect in his party outfit. Well the frustrations of scrabble, when you get a great word and can’t put it down, grrrrrr, that’s a mean game, or a cruel clever apponent, that knows how to play extremely tactically.

Thanks, Rebecca – these characters look a lot of fun. I hear you on those Scrabble frustrations; fun but frustrating. It’s why I tend to stick to Countdown – much simpler! 😉

I’d be willing, any time. This would be a brilliant word to put down in Scrabble, no question, Jacob…and one which would certainly make you appear more knowledgeable than the adversary ! New to me. B

  8. Catching up on posts!!! OMG!!!!! BEST….. PRESENT….. EVER!!!!!! You got me a Zonkey???? Are you kidding me? This is amazing!! I can’t believe I’ve just now seen this, but that’s probably as it should be as I’m sitting down now and therefore fainting with delight is less dangerous!! And you played along with Scrabble Day! Wow! Thank you so much my friend!! That’s for adding some Zonkey cheer to my bday! yay!!!! 😃😃😃

Haha! Goodness, Charlie, I’m so glad you like him, but breathe! 😉

He’s the only adequate repayment for the wonderful Rex ( ❤ ). It was either a party zonkey or party polecat, but I thought ZONKEY surely a far more impressive word to lay down in Scrabble and I did a ferret recently anyway, so on the beloved zonkey trots! I only hope you're having an evening that befits his get-up. Have a great one!!

  9. Awesome! And what a great word. I admit i had to google it. What a bizarre -but cute- creature!
I LOVE scrabble! Looking forward to my daughter wanting to play it more as she gets older. She’s not that interested at the moment. Apart from at christmas, when i bought chocolate scrabble. I really love the game, but don’t often get the chance to play 😦
You mention you love writing games- well that’s something i also love! I play one ( and this will possibly sound kinda dorky, but anyway) where at the end of a scrabble game, i write a quick little story using all the words on the board. Sometimes i’ll just get the game out by my lonesome ( very sad) and just choose random tiles as if i *were* going to play, then make words, and use them as writing prompts. Megadork funzies!

Thanks so much! Yes, I didn’t know of their extistence until recently, when my friend Charlie – doodlewash.com – did a series of watercolours on uncommon animals. They are fascinating!

This Scrabble story prompt sounds like a fabulous idea. How interesting to think what inspiration could come of some words that you conjured up yourself, but probably wouldn’t have actually thought of without the game’s guidance. I might have to give this a go – I really need to get back into writing, I don’t do nearly enough!

And don’t worry: I too am guilty of playing Scrabble solo, many a time! 🙂 It’ll be wonderful when your daughter is old enough to have a go; I’m looking forward to doing the same with my niece. I hope I can turn her into a word nerd!

      • Ah, such a relief to know that i’m not the only solo scrabbler out there, haha! You can still have a lot of wordy fun on your own. There are a bunch of word games i love to play. Have you heard of the Surrealist Games? If you haven’t already, i definitely recommend them! Lots of nonsensical fun.
Yes, i hope your niece becomes a word nerd! We need more of them in the world, in my opinion 🙂
I checked out doodlewash, too; there were paintings of food, and it made me hungry. So now i must snack, mefinx!

  10. I believe in the zonkey. My spirit is crushed by the game, as my late wife defeated me for decades. Now she is gone, I cannot look at it. There are still score-sheets in the box reminding me how bad I was!

Aw, thanks for sharing, Greg. It’s a relief to hear I’m not the only one who didn’t master Scrabble! I expect the score sheets of my games are equally unflattering.
