Next Dimension: Dodgems

dodgems00At last! After wandering the length of the entire park, trundling past the sedate to the downright insane and being thoroughly unmoved, we have finally arrived at the best darn fairground attraction ever. It’s perfect, which incidentally also means that Fairground Attraction would surely be satisfied. How tidy.

We are of course at the Dodgems, or Bumper Cars, whichever you prefer. These bumpy beasts have been creating havoc since the 1920s. It’s really the only place where I’m acceptable behind a wheel; you drive stylish cars and crash into everyone, with hilarity ensuing as you inevitably all get into a big pile-up in a corner and nobody can move.

This was my go-to ride at the fair, theme park or anywhere else they might be. I used to enjoy surveying the competition and singling people out, basically going after them for the duration. If you happened to look even slightly like one of my school teachers, my, you were doomed, or at least you would have been, were I a decent driver.

I was so into the ride that, on one occasion, my sister and I were in fact the only people on it. And we were in the same car. Noting the slight dip in turnout and us sitting there like lemons, the operator himself ventured out of his cubicle and joined us. However, he decided to try and look super cool by standing on the back, rather than sitting in the car like any normal person would. Surely this was short-sighted; I mean, what if we hit him? Perhaps he looked at us and made some estimations on our driving skill. He’d have been right – but we still hit him, and he still went flying! Needless to say, that was the end of our ride. Still makes me laugh twenty or so years later.

He did get his own back a bit later on, though, for there was another time when, as soon as the bell rang and the vehicles powered up, I zoomed backwards, uncontrollably, until crashing into (and breaking) the arena railings. Oops! This is also hilarious. So many fun memories of this ride – now I want another go, and right now!

The 3D model. Thank goodness for splines and LoftNURBS, as the latter is basically responsible for everything you see here, bar a few of the outer details on the vehicle, and the steering wheel. I essentially made the outer shell by constructing a chain of rectangles – the tool bridges the gaps with polygons. The smoothness of the model wasn’t actually what I was going for; I was looking for a more square look of the 80s/90s kind I’ve the most vivid memories of – never mind. As I seem to say every time, there was probably a much easier way of doing this, but, again, never mind! It was hugely frustrating at times, but I’m dead chuffed to have finally come out with something resembling a dodgem. I wouldn’t have believed that at teatime…

The car has working headlights installed, too:

The arena itself probably could do with some work – well, there’s no probably about it. I think I got so excited by the progress of the vehicle that I rather sped through this. I certainly hope no cars go between those front-central pillars…

The speckled finish I ultimately ran with wasn’t my only design. Cinema 4D makes patterning and texturing so easy, it’d have been remiss not to experiment with some fancy styles. Here are a few variations:

So desperate for a ride on the dodgems now. Ah well. Until I bump into you next, cheerio!

  1. Another great fun piece of work, you are giving that old game ‘theme park’ a run for its money ( never played it myself, but my brother was hooked, so much so that he now designs the graphics for games) love the dark night scene. P.s what do you do for work, do you use all of these skills that you have digitally. 😀

Glad you enjoyed these, Rebecca! I used to play Theme Park! And Theme Park World, the sequel. It was fun, though I always preferred RollerCoaster Tycoon, as I felt that was geared more toward creativity. I’ve probably played RCT more than any other game… worrying amounts of time!

I’m actually unemployed, and have been for a couple of years now. I do have an fDA in Graphics though so anything visual is, you’d hope, a possibility.

      • Oh yes I remember all of these games….never played myself though. Your graphics are fantastic, you would do well in the gaming industry, maybe you could design your own app game? They can make quite a
        Lot of dosh 😀

You’re so sweet! I’d love to do that kind of thing but have never been great at generating games. Maybe we can collaborate on a Crystal Maze or Interceptor app! 😉

      • Well you need a good team, my brother designs the graphics, his pal does the jargon bit ( the strange computer numbers, that make it move, and do stuff) someone else does, something else, lol that’s my understanding of how a game is made, lol, lol, lol…..probably simplified massively. I think you would be good at it, you should show your portfolio off, my brother went into games having never done them before, and learnt on the job, previously he was doing the same sort of thing as yourself, for teletext. You never know what’s round the corner?

Wow o wow! I have always loved dodgems, and yours are fab, not least because the designs remind me of beautiful shoes…mmm, shoooooes…. 🙂

Haha! Thanks, Rebecca! You know, when I was making these, I kept saying to myself, “You haven’t made a dodgem, you’ve made a shoe.” It’s come out slightly curvier in places than I was intending. Clearly though, there should be a real-life version of the ride where the cars are shoes!

  4. These are terrific! When I think how many holiday hours I made my poor old Dad accompany me on the bumper cars when all he wanted to do was go to the pub, I feel slightly ashamed!

Thanks Michael. Ha! Aw, I’m sure he didn’t mind really – and at least he went on with you… mine would just stand by, willing the ride to be over so we could go home! How he missed out!

  5. These are sooooooo cool!! Yay! We called them Bumper Cars, but j like Dodgems better so I’ll be using that from now on. Those are cars are masterpieces, Jacob! Love the detail and the saucy patterns you chose to adorn them. They’re awesome!! 😃

It’s seemingly interchangeable over here. Dodgems is a nice name, but Bumper Cars suggests more bumping, so they both have their pros 😉 Thanks Charlie – I think this was all a bit of a fluke! I certainly wasn’t expecting it to come out as happily as it did. As for the saucy patterns, I’d certainly go all out to bag the pink-and-black zonkey stripe car. 😉

      • hehe… I can just picture you rushing for it and knocking over children as they open the gates! Lol I guess the difference in the names is just whether you want to be on the defensive (Dodgems) or offensive (Bumper Cars). hehe

It definitely should be Bumper Cars, then! 😉

  6. Jacob, I’m so in awe of your drawings. These are amazing illustrations. I always loved riding the bumper cars and trying to out do my older brother!

They were so much fun, weren’t they – if only we could all get together and have a ride! Thanks Sharon, and also thank you for your suggestion to do them after the Teacups, as it’s what convinced me to give them a go.

  8. So i had the same thought that Rebecca up there ^ had; i was totally seeing shoes. Amazing shoes that i would like to wear.
These look like photos. No idea how it’s done. Looks very time consuming! You’re definitely dedicated.
I have a confession. I’ve never been in a dodgem car!!!! Given that they are currently the only kind of car i’m allowed to drive, i really should give it a crack some day. Rather paranoid about somehow causing something to go wrong, though. That tends to happen with me and machines :/ You make it sound fun, though!

Ha ha – well, thanks again! These were fun to design. Perhaps I missed my vocation, and should look into shoemaking.

What’s this? Never!? Go on the dodgems!! They’re so much fun! Likewise, they are the only machine I can drive, and likewise, my exploits often did end with something going wrong, as mentioned. But it was so worth it 😉

      • haha, perhaps shoemaking should be considered? I’d definitely wear the red one, and the pink and black one as shoes. Even the word “Dodgems” could work as a trendy shoe brand name, in my opinny onion. “ooh, nice shoes!” , ” yeah, thanks; they’re Dodgems.Limited edition Jaywalk collection.” * adjusts sunglasses, sips latte*. Mate. Even the ‘Jaywalks’ part works. Is this destiny at play?
*cowers in shame* I know, i know! I’m a complete wuss. I get quite anxious about public spaces containing lots of people and noise, so it’d be hard for me to not freak out in such an environment. The situation you described in which it was only you, your sister, and the guy running the dodgems sounds like the ideal sitch for someone like me, haha. Perhaps something for me to aim for: start out slowly; go to nice, quiet, unpopulated- possibly haunted- fairgrounds, and work my way up from there as i grow in confidence!
It’s excellent that you have such a good sense of humour regarding the things-going-wrong bit. Again, i don’t think i’d handle that too well, haha.I hope the dodgem guy was cool about it- that’d help a bit!

Oh, this sounds like it has such potential, it’s crazy. You know, an old girlfriend used to always praise me on my shoe-selecting skills. And, a few years ago while at university, I did some work for a local kids’ shoe company (albeit just graphics) which went very well. Maybe the world is trying to tell me something indeed! 😉

And look at that: you’ve even sorted out the name – perfect! – and the advert! An untouchably cool woman with shades and latte caught jaywalking by a hunky cop.

Perhaps I’ll give some actual shoe renderings a go? I like this idea. Me, a fashionista. Hilarious. I’ll be sure to send you a fair cut of my millions when they’re rolling in.

The anxiety is perfectly understandable. I fear I would be much more susceptible to this nowadays, which might be why the sudden urges to go to such amusements are quickly and easily quashed. I rather need someone to persuade me to go. The dodgems are a pretty cool ride, though, for you can strike the throttle and take out your frustrations indiscriminately on the fellow fair-goers, all veiled in the pursuit of fun. It might even prove beneficial 😉

Oh, the vendor chap was only hugely embarrassed! Which was lucky really, as it could have been a nasty fall and/or he could have been pretty narked. I think he realised it was down to his own stupidity. And again, on the ‘Breaking the Fence’ anecdote, the guy was sweet about it, realising it wasn’t down to me being inept (for once). Thank goodness!

  9. The shoe thing is more than just mere coincidence! I’d say you DEFINITELY have to design shoes now. Actually sounds like a lot of fun, really! haha, yes! Mr Wade in uniform could surely move some shoes from the shelves! I’ll buy some.

Yes, render some footwear! And double yes, please do feel free to send me a cut of zee millions. It’ll go further over here, as the pound is worth about twice our lousy dollar, i think, haha. ( maybe you could get the shoes made here?)

Yep, crowds are offputting. But the payoff of the dodgem crashing could be worth it. I do imagine that there’d be something therapeutic about crashing into stranger’s vehicles without consequence. I hope you get to enjoy that sort of activity again sometime in the not-too-distant future!

Well that’s good to hear. Standing up on a dodgem car sure doesn’t sound like the brightest idea! And breaking a fence is always better when it’s not due to one’s own ineptitude! I get so oversensitive about things that i’d probably still blame myself. I’m awful with stuff like that! Glad that you’re a little more level headed and reasonable about things!
