Kenny Everett

kennyeverett-2Another attempt to give a well-meaning prod to my drawings, this time returning to hatching the first time in really quite a while. Well, I say hatching – it moved more into scribbling territory toward the end! Like before, I went in with just the standard Photoshop brush, though this time I applied a slight angle and also a jitter in size for each stroke, to give it a slightly bumpier, sketchier impression. Much fun was had, though admittedly not quite to the degree of my previous foray into stippling. I’m not sure Kenny was overly co-operative; his expression seemed to make things doubly difficult, especially those big blue eyes, which I feel as though I’ve spent all day fretting over (it really has been quite a while!). They look much better and less ‘axe murderer’ than they once did, but there’s still something about the face stopping it from being completely crazy-adorable Kenny to me, and I can’t quite put my finger on the guilty party.

Shamefully I only discovered Everett quite recently, randomly stumbling across some snippets of his madcap BBC series The Kenny Everett Television Show. I hadn’t laughed so much for a very long time. Widely hailed a genius of radio and making a seamless transition to television, I can certainly see where people are coming from with such high praise, equally clear is why he continues to be held in such adoration. A very funny and lovable character, much missed. I must find the time to track down more of his work.

Inept DIY man Reg Prescott’s hapless exploits might be a tad graphic, but, as Cupid Stunt would insist, it’s all done in the best possible taste.

He certainly was – his humour still brightens the day. Thanks Camilla!

  1. Those scribbles and lines are amazing! It looks like chaos if you go waaaay in, but the chaos makes a fantastic face once you pan out. Incredible job, Jacob!

Thanks, Teresa – yes, I thought the chaos appropriate for Kenny actually!

Thanks, Charlie – those eyes were darn troublesome! I think Kenny could make just about anyone smile, he was (still is!) hilarious.

  2. Oh wow, I loved his show, self mutilation, in the most funny ways, only he could have got away with it in the way he did. ❤️ You have captured his cheeky smile superbly

Thanks, Rebecca! The mouth actually seemed to come a lot easier with this technique, which was nice. I agree, Kenny had such an endearing way; it all comes off as just a bit of mischief rather than anything unpleasant.

      • Totally, that sums him up, mischievous talent❤️ I think I probably watched every one of his shows…..in the days when we only had three channels, and TV turned off all by itself, whereby a young girl appeared, she just sat there, so still, and some horrid noise to accompany her…..now it’s on forever, but never anything decent. We need a Jacob channel, full of all these shows you keep reminding me of, keep it up, I like recovering these memories.😀

I agree – though there are still good shows out there, they get drowned in minefields of tedium. I don’t know if Kenny’s series are actually repeated anywhere – perhaps they are, on a satellite channel and out of my reach. It’s a real shame if he isn’t.

I like the sound of Jacob TV 😉 It’s really been enjoyable here too – this blog has essentially morphed into a big nostalgia trip!

Haha, yes! I’ve seen a couple of trailers lately – exciting stuff. Also if you don’t know, Challenge are showing some old ones at 6PM weeknights. Lots of fun!

  3. Ha! I vaguely remember him being on TV when i was a kid. I can’t really remember details, but for some reason i’m getting an image of big fake hands. Like, he did a song in which his hands got bigger and bigger every time the camera cut back to him..? And one sketch had something to do chunky custard, maybe. Or i could be thinking of something else O.o But my parents definitely watched his show.
Anyway, excellent drawing! I loves me a bit o’ cross hatching. I don’t think he looks too ‘axe murderer’ 😉 Just looks pretty cheeky to me!
P.s. pardon my inconsistent commenting and likes; i’ll be doing both in dribs and drabs about the place, as i’m busy packing my house up for a big interstate move. I’ve realised one needn’t be away for too long to miss out on a LOT of posts. So i have a bit of catching up to do….!

That sounds like Kenny to me! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rX03hgf_LcM

Excellent. I wish I’d caught more of his work growing up – given I recall seeing zero, I can only surmise that my parents weren’t big fans of his. Lovely to be discovering fresh funnies now, though, of course.

Glad you like the drawing! Ha ha, he really did look pretty sinister at one stage – I seriously had to work on the eyes.

Don’t worry about the inconsistency; the ‘come-and-go’ is all part of the blogging world, I’ve found. Any visit at any time is a joy. I wish you well with your big move!

      • Haha, yes- the hands! I’ll have to delve into the past and get properly re-acquainted with Kenny 🙂
Eyes can be tricksy when the person is making a bit of a funny face. Well, i think ya did a fine job.
Aww, thank you! I’m mostly just freaking out about how my cat will fare during a 12+ hour car trip :/ Anyhoo, i’m sure it’ll all work out. Cheers again, and keep up the drawing!

I’d definitely recommend it! He has made me smile to a most uncharacteristic degree over the past few days.

Fingers crossed for a smooth journey with minimal pussy trauma! All the best!

      • You’re so right Jacob, and now Caroline Aherne is gone, and Victoria Wood, not many left like them any more and they’re so needed 😕

I know, goodness, it’s been a harsh year hasn’t it – indeed Terry Wogan cropped up in an episode of Kenny’s show I was watching last night. I guess we must find some more time to kick back and enjoy their fantastic work! Kenny has certainly been cheering me up over the past couple of days. 🙂

  4. Hi Jacob, your Kenny portrait is outstanding. I appreciate every line and scribble. I know the time it takes to draw a beautiful portrait like this. His eyes pull me right in.

This is absolutely in the best possible taste, Jacob 🙂 When my dad was younger he was often mistaken for Kenny Everett so its also a cracking portrait of my dad circa 1982!

Thanks, Tori! Ah, how funny! Who knew your dad was such an dab hand at DIY? 😉

Apparently in the 70s my uncle was often being mistaken for Noel Edmonds. He is, naturally, still teased about it to this day.
