Freddie Forever
After finding my Ultimate Warrior painting, I thought I’d go back in time and revisit the style, and naturally my first choice for experimentation was Freddie. I forget how long I spent on The Warrior, but I’m sure it was significantly longer than the round-about three hours of this exercise. It was much more fun than I remember it being, though I might just think that because I didn’t have to draw a face!
It’s thirty years since the fantastic Magic concerts at Wembley. I’m glad this opportunity came up as I was thinking earlier about doing something to recognise that. I had heard Queen surely before I was even born, but my first memory of seeing them, and Freddie, was on a video of one of these concerts. I was blown away, of course – and still am. No-one can touch Freddie.

Freddie is back and better than ever!! 😍This is awesome! Love the drama of the pose and backdrop. Never really been anyone to compare with him since.

I’m glad you like the background, as I’ve been conflicted by the stars and whether they’re a bit corny. They remind me a little of those glow-in-the-dark ones you used to put on the bedroom ceiling – not sure that’s terribly suitable!

Yep – I was born just a couple of months after he died, and so my mother, who is a massive fan, bombarded me with Queen music in that time. I never really had much choice in the matter. 😛
Thanks, Rebecca! This mostly took around three hours, which was pretty speedy for me, really. I suppose it’s because I had no facial features to fret over. There was a little time on top of that making adjustments to colour and whatnot.

Yes, it’s a good job she picked the best! Haha, aw, that’s a shame as Bowie was/is magical too. I still can’t believe he’s gone – it doesn’t seem right.
Oh, and just to say in a vast change of subject: I’ve heard from my sources that Robot Wars starts on Sunday 24th! Not long at all if true!

It’s funny that you say you were glad to not have to draw a face, because it seems to me that you excel in the drawing of faces! Always nice to be able to do something a little different, though. I like the background too. Suits it 🙂

Thanks so much! I’m glad you like the background as I was growing increasingly unsure about it. I do tend to fret over the mugs quite a lot, so I think I was just relieved to have a person facing the other way! And it was pleasing to shave so much time off in not having that concern.

Yeah, i understand. I used to draw a lot of faces, and as much as i loved them, it always seemed a bit of a relief to do something entirely face free once in a while! Plus, once we’re comfortable with them, it can be easy to get stuck on faces, while neglecting the other parts that make up humans! I remember going to some life drawing classes years ago and being struck by how daunted i was at the idea of drawing actual whole humans. You seem to be doing pretty well here!

Oh my, yes, if I were to do life drawing now, I’d probably be quite daunted too! It’s been a while since I’ve had a punt at that sort of thing. I quite enjoy the challenge of rendering fabrics/clothing, though – especially this, with the fun regal additions! – so full figures like this aren’t that much of a dread.

Great rendition of rock’s greatest frontman. No one can hold a stadium full of people like Freddie. I still remember when my dad gave me a copy of the Queen Killers Live! double LP when I was 9 or10. I wanted to be like Brian May so bad, I made my own guitar out of cardboard, glue and some rubber bands.
