Testing Times
The previous few weeks haven’t been blessed with much in the way of inspiration. Maybe it’s the infernal weather? Not really; I think I’ve begun to run out of nostalgic points of interest, so that channel is beginning to run a tad dry. This is a shame really, given what fun it’s been. I’ve been a bit lost and little has taken my fancy.
So, in a desperate attempt to get back on track, I went back to Reddit Gets Drawn. Old faithful. The more tolerant/long-standing friends of this blog will remember that I was at one stage doing these on a weekly basis, against the clock too. And sure enough, on return I came across this great model.
My attempt here wasn’t actually timed, as the wheel I previously used to determine the duration is, er… it’s in need of a new coat of glitter. 😉 But this exercise came in at just under an hour. It was a lot of fun – it’s a little bolder than my usual style and I’m pleased with the speed; the only thing getting me down being the background, which seemed quite the puzzle this time around, for whatever reason. Hey ho! Fun is the operative word. Whether it’s kicked anything else off, we’ll have to see.
Be sure to check out the comment thread itself, in which others are sharing their responses.
We have to take a little time to fill the well, so to speak – the well of inspiration. Glad you got your mojo back – great sketching!

Thanks ever so much, Cynthia – you’re so right. It does make the replenishment all the sweeter, I suppose!

I like this very much Jacob, it has a lovely hand-drawn quality. 🙂

Thanks, Rebecca! Yes, the fact that it looked a little fresher – completely by accident, too – was quite enticing!

So very talented. Bravo, my friend. Have you ever thought of planting yourself in a coffee shop and offering to do quickie portraits? You’d rock at it.

We did ‘people watch’ a lot at university. I wasn’t that great at it then, but maybe it is worth another shot. Thanks, Laura, as always!

Smashing drawing – and what a beard and a half that is! Keep it going, Jacob, great stuff.

Indeed – I’m quite jealous of how good it looks! Thanks, Michael, much appreciated. I’ll keep going as long as you do!

Wow! Love the bold style!! This looks fantastic, Jacob! And seriously… a wheel without glitter takes all of the fun away. Best to go without it until it’s fixed properly. 😉

Thanks, Charlie! The difference in style was quite the happy accident – Photoshop is full of surprises. And yes, a glitter-less wheel… we all know that woe.
(And yay! You’re not spam! Perhaps it was just André who thought you were naughty?)

I know it too well – but I’m sure you’re feeling a million times better for churning one out! The sketch looks awesome and you did it in less than an hour! 🙂

Thanks, Allan! Yes, it felt so good to finally get around to making something; it’s been hugely frustrating wanting to draw with nothing jumping out or coming to fruition. Now I just have to keep it up, I guess!

Thanks, JP. It really was a great reference, handsomely directed (and posed!)

This one is a doozy, jacob! You’ve made his beard look so real! 💪
Perhaps as inspiration, you could follow the Doodlewash Aug daily themes. That way, you’ll never run out of ideas, eh?!
Cheers, janina
Or jmnowak, posting from my new phone…

Hi Janina! Ooh, I like doozies! Funny really, the beard is surely the part where I was paying the least attention to realism!
The Doodlewash prompts are a good idea. I’ll have a gander.
