Mazemaster and Mumsey

Would you enter a dungeon to play a game devised by these two?

I hear that the new The Crystal Maze has been axed by Channel 4 after only three series. I must confess I stopped watching it about five episodes in, feeling it was not made for me. It doesn’t sound like it ever improved, and indeed the trajectory of viewing figures suggested it wasn’t made for lots of other people also. Going celebrity only for its final run was the final straw. It’s a frustrating misfire; the first episode back in 2017 drew one of the biggest audiences of the year for Channel 4 and the opportunity for something special was obviously there. Oh well! At least we still have the original series, and that was actually quite good.

With that mindset, you can understand why, on hearing of its termination, I produced this. Here’s a pixel art portrait of our mellifluous maître-d to the Crystal Maze, Richard O’Brien and his Mumsey (Sandra Caron) from days of yore. The style is loosely based on the RetroMania characters I worked on. Neither look particularly like their real-life counterpart – I’ve tried Richard several times in pixel and have yet to perfect his unique visage – but the “eclectic” outfits were fun to work on. I wouldn’t want to complete a sprite sheet of either, though!

On a completely unrelated note: did you know it’s once again possible to access the Classic Editor, free of blocks? Maybe it has always been there, I’m not sure, but I thought if anybody out there is still annoyed by them then you might want to know. In your admin, go to Posts and note the ‘Screen Options’ tab in the top-right corner. Change to Classic View. You’ll then get the little ‘Add New’ button with the drop-down menu which allows you to select the Classic Editor. Hooray!

Thanks for the heads up about the editor! I absolutely hate the block ed. – it seems that being grumpy about the whole thing paid off! Cheers!!

Yay, glad to help! I’m not sure if the Screen Options tab was always there or if it’s a recent addition. Maybe they did actually listen!

Hi there, regards classic The Crystal Maze….it was Richard O’Brien all the way. In fact I sort of stopped watching when Ed Tudor Pole took the presenting reins as it just wasn’t our favourite harmonica player presenting. I did watch a few episodes and Ed did admirably, life just moved on and I fell out of watching. I do have to say that I loved the Chatsworth House Prods shows and the theme tunes.. Crystal Maze was penned by Zack Laurence who also did Treasure Hunt and Interceptor and I liked them so much that I learnt them on keyboard. Believe it or not but the reworked version of The Four Seasons (used for Interceptor) went down quite well as a keyboard solo on the pub/club entertainment circuit!

Hi! That’s fair enough. I first saw the show when I was four or five – it had ended by then, but was repeated on The Bigger Breakfast over summer, and I think they aired random episodes so you might get Richard one day and Ed the next. So I started with them both, really. They were both great in their individual ways.

I too love those Chatsworth shows. I was on an Interceptor binge just recently! Brilliant show with an epic theme tune, which was even released on vinyl in 1989 – I expect that’s something of a rarity these days!

Ha, same! I’ve learnt to tolerate the blocks at this point. It’s just that I know some were put off posting altogether back when it was rolled out, so it might do them good to know the old one is still there.

  3. Haven’t heard of crystal maze so I can’t really relate to that, but yes as with the previous poster I stuck with the classic editor for a while but then caved in after a while.

Have to say that wordpress has been a bit of a pain since I started with it ~3 years ago.

Started out OK but then moved to a hosted solution and spent weeks moving the stuff over despite the promised ease of transfer. Then it became so much maintenance and expense I switched it back to the .com version and promptly had my follower count drop from about 85 to 25. I also think that for the first couple of months nothing I posted was seen by anyone, at least 3 or 4 posts with not a single like. Perhaps the paintings were really bad 😂

You amaze me, Steve. It was pretty big on Channel 4 in the early 90s, replacing Treasure Hunt if you know that one. It was an adventure game show set in a fantasy world of different “time zones”. Really fun show, mostly because of the subjects here.

Yes I remember the hassle with your migration, where I kept trying to comment and it wouldn’t let me. Shame it screwed up the followers too.

I’ve always found WordPress quite friendly compared to some other sites, which is why the block editor bothered me so much. It put me off posting at first, but I’ve begrudgingly accepted it now.

Haha, I was going to say you were probably out clubbing while these were on!

Treasure Hunt was Anneka Rice jumping out of helicopters into the sea and suchlike, with the contestants guiding her by solving riddles.

      • Ah yeah, I do remember someone jumping out of helicopters – possibly with a clipboard for some reason, in my murky memory that is. I could be confusing with Bridget Jones though…

I’ve never seen Bridget Jones – clearly I haven’t lived! 😉 Anneka didn’t have a clipboard that I remember but usually had a map.
